What business leaders should do, and avoid doing, in the first two days after a dispute begins, from preserving evidence to choosing a strategy.

The first two days of a dispute often shape everything that follows. Decisions made in a hurry, or not made at all, can limit your options long before anyone files a claim.

A calm, organized response protects your position, your relationships and your budget.

1. Protect the Evidence

Once a dispute is likely, you have a duty to keep relevant documents. Pause any automatic deletion of email and messages, and tell key staff what they must keep.

2. Take Stock Before You Respond

Resist the urge to reply immediately. Gather the facts first, and consider these questions:

  • What does the contract say about notice, deadlines and dispute procedures?Who has spoken to the other side, and what was said?

  • Which documents and communications are most important? What outcome would be acceptable to the business?

  • Does your insurance policy require notice of the claim?Who inside the company should speak for you from now on?

Speaking with a lawyer early costs far less than repairing the damage of a hasty reply. A short, structured review in the first days gives you a clear view of the risks, the options and the likely cost of each path.

Frequently Asked Questions

Everything you need to know about working with Northcast Law Firm.

Still have questions?

What types of matters do you handle?

We advise businesses, founders and executives on corporate transactions, commercial litigation, employment and regulatory matters. Most clients come to us facing a significant decision or dispute that affects their companyโ€™s future.

How does an engagement work?

We begin with a short consultation to understand your situation and agree the questions that matter most. We then recommend a clear strategy and fee arrangement, handle the work alongside your team, and keep you updated at every stage.

What makes Northcast Law Firm different?

We are partner-led and deliberately small. Senior attorneys do the work, we stay practical, and we measure ourselves by the outcomes you achieve, not the volume of paperwork we produce.

Will you work with our in-house team?

Yes. We work alongside your legal, finance and leadership teams, share templates and playbooks as we go, and leave your people better equipped to manage similar issues in the future.

How quickly can you get started?

Most new matters begin within a few business days of an initial consultation. Urgent matters, such as injunctions or deadline-driven transactions, can be staffed immediately.
