A simple guide to the main ways of resolving a business dispute, and how to choose the one that fits your goals, budget and timeline.

When a business dispute cannot be settled with a phone call, leaders face a choice about where and how to resolve it. Each route has different costs, timelines and risks.

The right choice depends on what you need most: speed, privacy, a binding result or the chance to preserve the relationship.

Mediation: Control and Speed

In mediation, a neutral third party helps both sides reach their own agreement. It is usually faster and cheaper than other routes, it is confidential, and you keep control of the outcome. It works best when both sides want to find a deal.

Arbitration: Privacy and Finality

Arbitration is a private process in which an arbitrator decides the dispute. It can be quicker than court and lets you choose a decision maker with the right expertise, but appeal rights are very limited and costs can be significant.

Court: Authority and Precedent

Litigation offers formal procedures, the power to compel evidence and, where needed, urgent relief such as an injunction. It is often slower and more public, so it is best reserved for disputes where those strengths matter.

FAQS

Frequently Asked Questions

Everything you need to know about working with Northcast Law Firm.

Still have questions?

What types of matters do you handle?

We advise businesses, founders and executives on corporate transactions, commercial litigation, employment and regulatory matters. Most clients come to us facing a significant decision or dispute that affects their companyโ€™s future.

How does an engagement work?

We begin with a short consultation to understand your situation and agree the questions that matter most. We then recommend a clear strategy and fee arrangement, handle the work alongside your team, and keep you updated at every stage.

What makes Northcast Law Firm different?

We are partner-led and deliberately small. Senior attorneys do the work, we stay practical, and we measure ourselves by the outcomes you achieve, not the volume of paperwork we produce.

Will you work with our in-house team?

Yes. We work alongside your legal, finance and leadership teams, share templates and playbooks as we go, and leave your people better equipped to manage similar issues in the future.

How quickly can you get started?

Most new matters begin within a few business days of an initial consultation. Urgent matters, such as injunctions or deadline-driven transactions, can be staffed immediately.
